gone from rainy and cloudy to clear and sunny, all within a single

morning. The temperature had risen slightly, too, so Delk took off her

jacket and tied it around her waist. The parade was about to begin, so

there wasn’t time to unload the bags at the hotel.

Luckily, Delk had packed lightly. Everything fit neatly into her

backpack—a change of clothes, a toothbrush, some underwear, her

makeup bag, and a spare pair of contact lenses (just in case). Maybe

the hotel would have an iron so she could press the wrinkled green

blouse she’d borrowed from Lucy.

Bands played, whistles blew, music blared out of pubs, and already a

few of the locals were drinking Guinness. The Galway parade hadn’t

started yet, but the excitement in the air indicated it was about to.

Delk and Lucy positioned themselves in front of Iris and Brent so they

could actually see the parade, and Trent went off in search of snacks

for Iris.

The theme of the parade was Saint Patrick’s heroic struggle to

save the Irish. Kicking off the exhibition was a colorful papier-mâché

float. It graphically depicted Saint Patrick awaking from his dream—

his alarmed reaction to the call from God. Interspersed between

themed floats were the typical parade sights, marching bands, cheer-

leaders, local politicians, and even bagpipes. Later, there was a series

of four floats, one after the other, which portrayed the saint’s forty

days of fasting, and still another of his battle with the snakes, and

finally a float made entirely of clover, which showed the Druids’

defeat.
